As both an animator and an instructor, I get many questions regarding Adobe Flash and Anime Studio Pro. Which software is more affordable? How does each utilize animation? Is Anime Studio easier to use? And overall, which software is better? The clear answer is this: neither of these pieces of software are better than the other. However, there are differences that may or may not benefit users, depending on the circumstances. I will list five main points in this article regarding the pros and cons of each software.

Bone VS frame by frame animation. While AS can do frame by frame animation, it was built for bones. Bone animation is the technique in which you draw out a skeletal structure and animate an object based on it. Flash has a basic bone and tween system, but it doesn’t hold a candle to Anime Studio’s. However, Flash is more usable as a frame by frame animation software. There is no right or wrong here, it just depends on your style.

Anime Studio is more user-friendly. It’s true, especially if you have never dealt with animation before. The software is pretty straight forward (especially the Debut version) yet deep enough for professionals to get some real mileage out of it. AS was designed to be an animation solution. Adobe Flash is an overall more robust package, allowing for programming, web design and more, so the focus isn’t strictly on animation. If you’re new to animation, and don’t want to become overwhelmed, Anime Studio may be your best bet.

Adobe Flash costs more. If you’re on a budget, you may want to consider the cost of these software. Adobe Flash can cost upwards to $500 USD while Anime Studio can be snagged for $100 or so, depending on where you buy. There is, however, a trade off to this…

Adobe Flash does more than just animation. Interactive websites, games, mobile applications and the list goes on. Flash is used by many in the industry for more than just cartoon animation. Plus, it integrates well with the entire Adobe Suite. If you want more than just vector design, Flash may be your best bet.

Try them for yourself! I could go on and on about the differences between these two pieces of software. At the end of the day though, it all comes down to personal preference. Ease of use VS more features, bone animation VS traditional animation, cost VS integration, etc. These are all things to consider before plunking down money. Take some time, download the demos and try them out for yourself.

Adobe Creative Suite 5 is here with promises of lightning speed, real time edits, and drastically reduced render time. With Cuda, Mercury, and Nvidia on board, just what is in the Kool-aid?

Last summer you began to see releases about lightning fast render speeds with Cuda technology offered by Nividia. Nividia is one of the most popular video cards along with ATI Raedon. In a pc climate of high resolution and home gaming machines, headlines like ‘reduce your render time by up to 80%’… is an attention getter.

You can contact a representative at Nivida to get more education about these cards, Cuda technology and exactly how that falls into place with this new release of Creative Suite 5.

‘Cuda’ is Nivida’s technology. Wikipedia will tell you that: CUDA is an acronym for Compute Unified Device Architecture, a parallel computing architecture developed by Nvidia. CUDA is the computing engine in NVIDIA GPU’s that is accessible to software developers through industry standard programming languages.

GPUs are ‘Graphics Processing Units’, specialized processors first developed by NVIDIA in 1999. Graphics Processing Units is a good way of thinking of this resource. When you think about the dramatic increase in media in our Web resources, movies, high resolution imagery, these graphical processing units handle that part of the processing taking a large load off the main processor and in the simplest terms, make the experience much faster.

GPU’s originally appeared for rendering three-dimensional graphics, in engineering, and CAD (computer aided drafting) applications. However, with the onset of high media content in so many of our Web topics and categories, graphic processing has become a standard component in any new pc.

GPU’s have been around for some time gravitating from research environments to our homes but Adobe’s Creative Suite 5 has been re-written in 64 bit to take full advantage of the addressing capability of Nvidia Cuda GPU’s. Adobe has also introduced the Mercury Playback engine. You will see and hear a lot of claims about Nvidia and Mercury being written to work together but at the heart of this new technology is the ability to address enormous amount of memory, RAM. Offloading main processor tasks that are handled by the graphics card free up the main processor while having graphic related tasks handled much more quickly.

For all the technical talk, perhaps the best way to evaluate these enhancements is to take a test drive. If you have worked with high definition video, AVCHD/MTS formats and have become used to slowly reviewing your scene, try it with Premiere Pro CS5. This is a great promotional video showing just what a difference you can expect: Adobe Genesis Project.

It peaks with the placement of four different hi definition videos on the timeline simultaneously. There is no noticeable delay.

It is exciting to be able to view your hi definition takes in real time, add special effects, apply real time editing and review your work on the fly but ultimately it comes down to that most valuable asset for any of us that is… your time. You’ll have a lot more of it.

Full Moons, Dogcreek, think globally, act locally.

Web Designer Tom Womack uses Adobe Design Suite creating dynamic sites with rich media.

Adobe After Effects is my application of choice having endless possibilities. I use Premiere Pro for video editing, Flash for final Web compatible movie. I am on a constant learning curve and regularly update my media page.

Whether you’re a web developer, a graphic designer, or an artist, you’ve undoubtedly counted on Adobe software to help you get the job done. Now, the design world is buzzing about Adobe Creative Suite 3, a collection of computer graphic design tools that are fully integrated to allow you to work in almost any medium.

Adobe offers six different editions of CS3, designed to fit the needs of a variety of professionals. The six editions are:

Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium – Developed for the designer who works in mobile, Web, and print publishing, CS3 Design Premium includes the professional or extended versions of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, and Acrobat.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Standard – Perfect for the professional who works primarily in print, CS3 Design Premium includes InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat Professional.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium – Adobe takes web design software to a whole new level by allowing integration across virtually all Adobe products, including Photoshop Extended, Illustrator, Flash Professional, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Contribute Cue, Bridge, and Device Central.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Standard – Perfect for website design, this graphics software integrates Dreamweaver, Flash Professional, Fireworks, and Contribute.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Platinum – Adobe solves the challenges of video post production by combining a wide variety of products, including Bridge, Dynamic Link, Device Central, Acrobat Connect, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop Extended, Flash Professional, Illustrator, Soundbooth, and Encore. For professionals working in a Windows environment, it also includes OnLocation and Ultra.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 Master Collection – The CS3 Master Collection is a computer graphics dream come true, with virtually every Adobe product integrated so that you can create in almost any medium, including film, print, mobile, Web, and interactive. The Master Collection includes InDesign, Photoshop Extended, Illustrator, Acrobat Professional, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Contribute, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Soundbooth, and Encore. Web applications include Bridge, Cue, Device Central, Stock Photos, Acrobat Connect, Dynamic Link, OnLocation, and Ultra.

Essentially, CS3 provides professionals with product configurations that will enable them to seamlessly accomplish their goals. For example, designers can do web page design, user interface design, game development, e-learning, animation, and mobile development. Those who work with video can do editing and production, multimedia, audio editing and production, and visual effects. And, of course, professionals can edit and fuse images, as well as design for print.

Professionals also appreciate Adobe graphic design website software because it works on a variety of platforms, including Windows Vista and both Tiger and Leopard on Macs. And, for those who already own Adobe products, it’s easy to upgrade to CS3 – even from standalone graphics software programs. Finally, those who purchase one CS3 edition and then decide that they would like an enhanced version (moving from, for example, CS3 Design Standard to Design Premium) can easily make the switch.

There’s no question that the creativity of designers has spurred Adobe to step up and develop a toolkit that enables professionals to reach new heights.

Adobe is one of the largest software companies on the planet. The company founded in 1982 by Charles Geschke and John Warnock had sales of close to $3billion in 2009 and has approximately 8,715 employees worldwide. A company of this size is likely to have a large user base, in fact more than 90% of creative professionals have Adobe Photoshop software on their desktops.

Some of Adobe’s core software products are Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Premier Pro, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Dreamweaver and Adobe Acrobat. A pretty impressive collection of software, which is pretty much essential to anyone involved in the digital creative fields. The problem is Adobe software is very expensive, so how can you save money on Adobe’s flagship products?

Educational Discounts

Adobe has a strong presence in the educational market. Adobe likes to create new customers for its software as early as possible and that means targeting schools, colleges and universities. Adobe knows that if people are trained to use their software from an early age, it means that employers/businesses will have to provide the software that people have been trained on, which undoubtedly will be Adobe and sold to them at a premium price.

With this in mind, Adobe are willing to offer students up to 80% off the regular retail price, with their Adobe Student Edition software. So if you are a student you can purchase Adobe software at amazingly discounted prices. Details of how to purchase the Student Editions is available at the main Adobe site.

Free Open Source Equivalents

If you just want to get the job done and aren’t fussed what software you use, open source software may be the way to go. There are number of free software packages that have similar functions to Adobe’s flagship products. For example, a good equivalent to Photoshop would be the free GIMP, which allows photo/pixel based editing, similar to Photoshop. If you are an illustrator or vector graphics artist Inkscape is a free open source equivalent to Adobe Illustrator. If you are looking for a free open source equivalent to Adobe Dreamweaver then NVU is more than capable of dealing with your web design requirements. A quick search on Google will turn up many free or open source alternatives to Adobe software so you needn’t buy expensive Adobe software to get the job done.

Adobe Coupon Sites

Adobe fortunately has a number of sales on its software throughout the year. It does this through discounts on major retailer sites such as Amazon and time limited sales on its own site. It also releases a number of coupon codes for its software, which tend to vary in discount and the software they apply to. These coupons are often short-lived so you have to be alert to when they become available. Luckily, there are a number of coupon sites that have a dedicated web page for Adobe coupons. By checking your favorite coupon sites regularly, you can scoop an Adobe software bargain.

You can find Adobe coupon codes here

Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 was released some time back and is not the current release, but still has many features that will enable you to create great videos. I’m using this version of the software, but this guide will also work for other versions as well, with only slight differences. In this article I will be explaining how to add a simple transition to your video.

I am assuming you already know how to take the video from your camera and put it onto the computer. This guide explains where to go from here. Your camera information booklet will guide you in getting your video from your camera onto your computer.

So, firstly, open Adobe Premiere Elements and select New Project from the dialogue box that appears while the program is loading. Type in a name for the project, bearing in mind this is not necessarily the name of the DVD, just the name given to the process in creating the DVD. You will name your DVD later. Also, select which folder on your computer you would like to save the creation process in. The default is the Premiere folder, but you can select one of you own. Navigate to your desired folder and hit OK. Check all details and hit OK to begin creating your DVD.

In the top left Media box, it should already be on the Get Media tab. If not, click on the Camera icon to open the Get Media tab. If your video is already on the computer in a folder, select Files and Folders. Navigate to where the video is, then click on it and select Open or OK. Your video should now be in the Media box on the top left of your work area. If you need to get more video files, select the Camera icon again and repeat the process until all files are in Premiere. If you can’t see your files, select the Film Reel icon on the media box, this opens the list for you. Now we want to begin editing.

At the bottom of your work area is the My Project box, with a grey box asking you to drag your video here. So hover the mouse over the video file you want to place first, then click and hold the button down as you drag the file from the Media box to the My Project box at the bottom. Release the mouse button and your video should now be in the My Project box. Next, drag your second video clip onto the new available space after the first clip in the My Project box. You should now see both clips next to one another, with a small box between them. This is where your transition will go.

On the media box, select the Effects and Transitions icon, this will open a list of all available effects and transitions. Scroll down to the Video Transitions list, which should already be opened. If not, click the small white arrow next to Video Transitions, this will expand the list for you. Double click on Dissolve, or click the small white arrow next to Dissolve to open the list. Hover over Cross Dissolve with the mouse, click and hold, then drag the transition down to the My Project panel, and into the small box between your video clips. Release your mouse button, and make sure the transition is now showing in the small box.

To get an idea what the transition will look like, click the first video clip in the My Project panel, then hit Play on the Monitor window in the center. Watch as your first video fades into your second video, very professional. If you are happy with it, click create DVD and burn your creation to disk. Sit back and watch your DVD video on your player at home.

Dan has a passion for writing about subjects that interest him, things like his current project at roundtheworldtrip.org among others. I love to travel and meet new people, often resulting in learning about different subjects. Also, visit my general site over at dan-stevens.com which is worth taking a look at.

I’ve written this tutorial for anyone who uses adobe premiere pro and wants to find out the best way to compress a video using “Windows Media Video”.

I cover things like what bitrate to use with what resolution and frame rate aswell as what a few of the different settings do and mean. Find out for yourself and take a read…

(not you will need to copy and paste image url’s in to your browser)

Getting to Adobe Media Encoder

1. Render all unrendered footage if you haven’t done so already in premiere pro

2. Now go, File >> Export >> Adobe Media Encoder

3. Select “Windows Media” from the format drop down list

4. Then, from the preset drop down list, select something like “WMV9 720 25p” (doesn’t really matter what you choose)

Video Settings

1. Select “Video” on the left hand side of the Adobe Media Encoder

2. Under Video, make sure…

Select “Windows Media Video 9” as the codec

Leave “Allow Interlaced Processing” Unticked

Under Bitrate Settings, Select “Two” encoding passes and make sure the mode is “Variable Constrained”. This offers way better results compared to a single encoding pass

Image: fullvoltage.com.au/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=333.0;id=29;image

Audio Settings

1. Select “Audio” on the left hand side of the Adobe Media Encoder

2. Under Audio, make sure…

Select “Windows Media Audio 9.1” as the audio codec

Under Bitrate Settings, Select “Two” encoding passes and make sure the mode is “Constant”. This will make sure the audio quality stays the same the whole way through the video

Image: fullvoltage.com.au/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=333.0;id=30;image

Audience Settings

1. Select “Audiences” on the left hand side of the Adobe Media Encoder

2. Audiences is the most important part as this is where you actually set the quality and the file size

3. Now, select your desired frame rate, it’s usually best to keep it at its original level. But, say you’re original level is 50 frames a second, reduce it to 25. If you’re going for a really small file, then you’d want to bring your fps down to 20 or 15, but 25 will always enhance the footage as it will appear a lot smoother.

4. For Pixel Aspect Ratio, set it to however you’re original footage is set. If you’re editing footage shot on the computer, then square pixels will give you the best results.

5. Frame Width and Frame Height is a big factor for when considering image quality with file size. You kind of need to match them both up. In theory, for simple scenes like a close up of a human face “1 bit” per 200 pixels will offer good results, you may even want to try 250 pixels per bit. But with a more complex scene which includes maybe scenery and shrubs or a fast action video.etc, you’d want to aim around “1 bit” per 100 pixels (no where over 140 pixels per bit). To work this out, simply look at all the scenes in your video. If your scenes vary a lot in terms of colour and complexity, then you want lesser pixels per bit, this will increase file size (or reduce image size) but will offer way better results otherwise. On the other hand, if you’re video contains long interviews with a still background. Then the compressor will be able to produce good results with a high pixel per bit rate.

6. Now, moving down to the basic audio settings, if you’re video contains a lot of sound and the sound is really important in the video. Then you wont want to go under 96kb/s, but I usually prefer to use 160kb/s or 128kb/s as if you compare the 160kb/s bitrate of the audio to the say 5000 bitrate of the video, you can see that the audio isn’t going to effect file size much in this case. The higher your video bitrate, the lesser the impact the audio will have on the filesize. Use CBR audio, not (A/V) CBR audio. Use stereo if your sound differs from channel to channel (most music does).

7. Back to the Video now, Set Decoder Complexity to Auto

8. For key frame interval, if you have a high action video with complex scenes, set this to about 1 or 2. On the other hand, if you have not so complex scenes like an interview with a still background, then you can raise this up to about 10.

9. Leave buffer size as default

10. Now, here is the good bit. Because earlier on, we set a Video Encoding mode to a Two pass encode with a variable but constrained bitrate. This means we can now give a maximum and average bitrate. It will use the maximum bitrate in the more complex scenes and will use the average bitrate for normal scenes. Now, setting your bitrate is important. This is basically, where we shove all our resolution and other data, in to a tightly packaged file. If you package your file to tight, bits of data start oozing out the corners which is why it’s important to package your video tight, but not too tight. Let’s say we have a rather complex video which is fairly fast paced with lots of different colours and scenes. We set our resolution to 1024×768 with a frame rate of 25 and we want excellent quality, but a small file size.

Ok, let’s put what we learnt in to play. Ok, 1024 multiplied by 768 gives us 786000 pixels. That means that every single frame will contain 786000 pixels. If our video is running at 25fps, that’s 19.2 million pixels a second. The way compressors work, is they look for similarities across multiple frames and they try and share the data. Sometimes, when you set the bitrate too low, it just can’t deal with that data so it needs to throw away some pixels. The lower the bitrate, the more pixels get thrown around or ripped up.

11. Now, we need to set the bitrate. So, seeing our scene is fairly complex, and we want good quality, I think 130 pixels per bit will be fine. So, lets divide 786000 by 130. This gives us 6040 bits. So, 6000 bits a second is what we need. We’ll set 6000 as the peak and 5000 as the average. Now, 5000 bits a second will produce a fairly large file in terms of the internet, but remember, we are using a resolution of 1024×768 which is very big in terms of the net, but we want viewers to see “all” the work we have put in to it.

12. Now, once the bitrate is set, we have our buffer size, the larger your bit rate, the larger you want your buffer size. In this case, a buffer of 20/25 will be fine (buffer usually doesn’t effect anything).

Image: fullvoltage.com.au/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=333.0;id=31;image

Saving

1. Now, save the preset buy hitting the floppy disk icon up the top of the Adobe Encoder Window. But, before you do that, place a comment for the preset if you want.

2. Now, hit ok at the bottom of the window which will then prompt you for a location to save it. It will also give an estimated file size based on your video length and you’re peak data rate (for both the video and audio). But seeing we are using a variable bit rate, this estimate is usually higher than the end result.

3. Let it render out, then enjoy.

Tips

It’s usually good to set your work area to a length of 5 seconds over a complex part of your video, that way, you can do test renders to find the best bit rate

If you get errors while exporting and you use a hyperthreading processor or a dual core processor, visit this site to fix the problem. If you don’t get this problem, it may still be a good idea to visit the site and get the new adobe media encoder.[http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/330380.html]

I hope you learnt something from this tutorial Smiley

Jenkin

Video production has made major advancements in the last two decades. Hollywood-style editing can now be done right from your home computer. Two big-name software programs in video editing are Adobe Premiere and iMovie. Here are three things to consider when using either one to cut and edit that next birthday party or wedding.

Linear or non-linear? If you do not have any previous experience editing video than iMovie will probably be your best bet. It is easier for beginners to learn than Premiere would be and it provides a more straightforward interface. iMovie runs on linear editing, meaning that the video is put into a single timeline and edited from there in the order that the video was shot, rather than the non-linear option in Premiere which has multiple video and audio tracks, providing more complexity for the more experienced user.

Special Effects: There are a number of special effects that one can do with either iMovie or Premiere. Text, chroma-key background display and, of course, cutting and splicing are just a few of the many visual effects you can manipulate on either of these programs. Again, it is suggested that beginners start off with iMovie and learn the basics from their special effects palette while the more advanced will have a broader brush to paint with using the array of available effects in Premiere.

What is it you are editing? What you have on film will determine a lot about the kind of post-production software you use to edit. While you can edit anything to any degree on either of these programs, it is suggested to beginners that they start with iMovie to edit even the most complex of their videos. Premiere has a steeper learning curve but there is a lot more one can do with it. Cutting out parts of a moving image and inserting another part as well as motioning and reframing a picture are just two of the plethora of options you have with Premiere.

As they always say, the best way to learn is to do it hands on. Whether you are an amateur who is just trying to make the best and simplest home video of your son or daughter’s birthday or you are trying to become another version of Martin Scorsese, these programs will help you along the way. You should now be better set to understand more about video editing, how it works, what tools are best and what to consider before editing your video. Most importantly, remember to have fun!

CS3, CS4 or even CS5 – No matter what version of Adobe Premiere Pro, removing the green screen from video is easy. Let’s break down the steps to make this happen.

1. Green or Blue Screen Background for Chromakey – when using either green or blue screens, they are going to work the best because these two colors work best against human skin color and require the least amount of light. Make sure that the size of the screen is large enough for the project, and the screen should have no visible wrinkle. Use fabric, bed sheet or painted wall to create green screens. Avoid shiny paper that produces glare, which will cause issues during editing. Standing too close to the screen casts unnecessary shadows so avoid it.

2. Setting Up the Chromakey Lighting – this is the most important part of the whole green screen effect. Make sure there are plenty of light sources especially when shooting indoor. Hydrogen lights, room interior lights or professional lights to illuminate the room (or studio) to absolutely prevent shadows from casting on the green screen.

3. Using Adobe Premiere Pro to Edit - drag the screen into time line. Instead of Video 1, use Video 2 time line. From the left menu, choose the new background effect, drag into the new time line to layer the two projects.

4. Control Chromakey from Effects Control Panel – finally, start blending the chromakey effect to clean up the images.

CHECKLIST:

Use green or blue screen backdrop. These colors work the best against the skin color while requiring the least amount of light to make effect come true.

Provide ample light source. Lighting the background with absolutely zero shadows casting the backdrop. Do not stand too close to the screen, and if nothing works, shoot outside, preferably on overcast day.

Adobe Premiere Pro to drag the finished videos, images and marry the two using Effects Control.
