Putting a Symbol In Another Symbol in Adobe Flash
In this short tutorial I show you how to create a symbol within a symbol. I used this method in my previous walking animation tutorial but now explain it in more detail here.

I’m pulling my hair out over this. I’ve created a character and converted it to a symbol, now within that symbol I have created symbols for arms, legs and the body. But I wanna create symbols for the eyes and mouth, that will be within the symbol for the head. I try and use the same method, symbol within a symbol basically repeated but for just the head, but the head just dissapears when I paste in the layers. Any one help? Will it just be easier not to have mouth and eyes within a head symbol?

When you say press f8 then call it walking 1 and the type is graphic. I did that but what happened is that my guy disappeared, so then i click the arrow and it exist out the walking 1 thing and when i try to do the other symbol they do not combined into 1 frame. Please Help

Make a new layer, left click on him, then right and then paste.
right click on a frame and then click “select all frames”, create then symbol and then it should let you past all frames, hope it helped.
Ok so what you have to do is turn turn all the parts of the body into individual symbols with the ‘convert to symbol’ option. Then select all the symbols and also go to ‘convert to symbols’ NOT ‘create a new symbol’. Otherwise you get a ‘can not place a symbol within a symbol’ msg. Wish someone explained this to me – would have saved me about 2 hours of my life!! Hope it is helpful to others.

For people on CS5.5. Don’t use the selection tool to copy the frames. Drag and highlight the actual frame in the timeline and highlight all the frames. Then you can copy frames.

[..YouTube..] I have made my character like in this tutorial. what about when I want the character symbol to change after a while (say in frame 40)? for example I want my character walk across the stage until it dissapears, then wear a hat for example and walk back (has to be somehow connected to the head symbol so it moves the same way and would be on top of the ears symbol instead of below etc..) just wondering if you have any advice since Im new to this…

[..YouTube..] It doesn’t work for me, when you said highlight all of the frames, I do, then I right-click and click copy, Then it just copies that one frame that I right clicked, they all don’t copy, just the one, And whenever I copy it, it just messes up the picture in the first place. [..YouTube..] @Evaahya because the first symbol says where it goes and the second symbol says what it does in that motion. EX ( symbol one moves the character across the screen, Symbol two makes him do the running motion
